Why does a ROUND pizza come in a SQUARE box?

commissioner, June 24, 2005
The common square shape of a pizza box has found it's design for reasons of part practical use, part cost-cutting manufacturing technique. On the practical side, square boxes stack quite easily compared to round boxes; provide better shock resistance when transported; and a are better fit for containment in industry standard heat preserving food containers used for pizza delivery. On the manufacturing side, square cardboard cutouts are cheaper to produce and cut than round shapes. Similar production cost concerns exist for printing eg. company logos and designs on the boxes.
